Congress passed a resolution declaring October as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Awareness Month. SCA can strike persons of any age, gender, race and even those who seem in good health.

CPR and early defibrillation with an AED are critical. However, fewer than one-third of adult sudden cardiac arrest victims receive bystander CPR. Effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after a sudden cardiac arrest, can double or even triple a victim’s chance of survival.

HeartSafe Communities is a recognition program based on the "Chain of Survival", which has been implemented in other states and countries to help obtain this goal. Its purpose is to recognize the excellent work being done by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) programs throughout Maine, and to provide further opportunities to enhance community partnerships, resources and services to improve cardiovascular health, and decrease deaths due to cardiovascular-related events, including SCA, Heart Attack and Stroke.
